& Thaipusum 08thFeb09 ♥
Tuesday, February 10
Thaipusam (Tamil: தைப்பூசம்) is a Hindu festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (Jan/Feb). It is also referred to as Thaipooyam or Thaippooyam in the Malayalam language. Pusam refers to a star that is at its highest point during the festival. The festival commemorates both the birthday of Murugan (also Subramaniam), the youngest son of Shiva and Parvati, and the occasion when Parvati gave Murugan a vel (spear) so he could vanquish the evil demon. Thanks to Mona(1 of my best Indian colleague/friend) who invited me to join her and her gf's family for this occasion. Had a very fun day though I was up from 5am till Midnight and practically standing/walking all the way, barefooted!
The Indian family welcomed me very much as very seldom U get a Chinese so into Indian cultures. I was eating home cooked Indian food whole day and get to wear a Punjabi suit and Sari.. Despite getting suntanned and blisters on my feet, I guess the experinces is enough to cover up all. If there's a chance next year, I wouldnt mind going as a supporter again.
